MONEY!

How do you all control money? I had to file bankruptcy simply so I would force myself to learn better money management skills and tips. So, one would think I have a good grip on it. Well, occasionally I tend to get money spendy. I've curbed it and am trying to be on a strict budget, but it's hard! I'm proud of how far I've gotten so far, but I'm all of a sudden pushed hard to try for a car. Well, SSI says you cannot have a new car, but you can have a used car. SSI says you can save up to $2000.00 but anything over it, they use it against you. Okay... so how do I begin to save for a car, when I WON'T put it in the bank and I CANNOT trust myself to save it in the safe and not get spendy fingers YET I refuse to allow anyone to hold onto my money for me. How do I solve this problem?? I am afraid to trust anyone with my money. So, what do you all do??

P.S. I should put an after thought here. I'm good with others money. I'm able to safe guard their money and be a fickle about giving their money back unless it's for a good reason. So, I have no problem with managing other people's money, but I cannot manage my own. See my quandry??

Okay, how about this? Buy a sturdy, locking cash-box. Keep your money in the bank until you have $1500.00 in savings, then withdraw $1000.00 in cash, put it in the lock-box, hide the lock-box in a place you won't see it often (back bottom of your junkiest closet, perhaps), and ask a friend or relative to keep the key for you. Then whenever you've gotten up to $1500.00 in savings again, get the key, put the money in the box, give the key back. Repeat as necessary.

The person holding the key doesn't need to know what it's for, or ever see the lock-box. Umm, glue a note to the inside of the lid, "This box belongs to (name and address)", just in case the person with the key disappars from your life and you have to take the box to a locksmith - so you can prove you didn't steal it.

Good luck!

She could rent a safety deposit box at the bank and do the same thing. That would be safer.

I'm a lot the same way, and the only things I've had any success with are programming myself to no longer think of the saved money as money (this is not $2000. It is "1/10 of a car.") and thinking of it as someone else's money (Less success with that one.).

With the first one, I've even been able to carry the money around with me and tell people I'm broke because I no longer think of that particular stack of cash as money.

Multiples are by no means the only ones to have difficulty with money, especially when you have so little that you can't save anything back. Why don't you check with VocRehab to see if they have a life skills course that includes basics of money management? Those are usually pretty straightforward. Good luck!
