Hi!

I haven’t been involved here in forever, I just lurk every now and then these days, but I’m having an interesting opportunity.

I might end up doing an information speech to a bunch of psych students about multiple issues, and I’m trying to decide what topics to cover. Does anyone do this or anything similar?

I’d love any suggestions! Thanks :)

Good luck on your speech!
I'm glad you're getting the opportunity to educate them.
No specific suggestions.

Being trans- and genderqueer and having a diverse range of sexual orientations, we sometimes talk to sociology classes at the Tennessee university we attend about (mostly male-to-female) transsexual, transgender, and genderqueer issues. I'm glad to see someone else who has had specialized experience is sharing it.

We've never talked to a class about being plural, but probably the greatest thing that has helped us talk about trans* and genderqueer stuff is relating our own experiences in a simple and clear way. The first time we were going to speak to a class, we'd prepared an outline of what we were going to say, but once we started speaking, we quickly abandoned the outline and just gave our brief life story and added some thoughts about what being genderqueer means to us. We threw in a few details to dispel misconceptions the general population has about trans* and genderqueer people, and then we took questions from the audience. I think we've spoken to classes in this fashion five times now, and each time we've given our presentation we've gotten better at giving it since we've been able to consider previous questions-and-answers to tailor the performance around. The last two times we've spoken were probably the most fun, since we were giving the presentation alongside a gay man for our campus GLBTStraight-ally group, but I don't know how easy it would be to find a willing partner for a presentation about multiplicity. :3

During our time with psychology majors at our school, I've noticed that the students really enjoy looking at case studies. If you could dig up any realistic, positive studies done on multiplicity, that might be a good place to start. Definitely, the best advice we can give is to build up your confidence and at least act as if you're very sure of what you're talking about. :3

*grins* we live in tennessee too..

hmm.. basically just give them examples.. and point out that we're not all axe murderers.. that almost all of us are functional.. have responsible jobs.. and are probably people they know. have known are plural. Depending on the students.. it could be a very good thing.

we'll try and come up with other ideas too

yeah, I mean we're mostly functional.. have been married 14 years, two bachelor's degrees.. going to grad school soon, full time job.. friends and active life(ves)..

Most of the other households we have met/known face to face.. usually have at least an advanced degree, are functional, and usually in helping professions (medical, healthcare field, child care.. something.. .. probably cause that's where our job is.. but that's been our experience)

let us know how it goes?

(*giggles* btw, it seems we aren't the only ones availing ourselves of the dream avatar program from gaiaonline *points to icon* but how do you make it alternate like that?)

That looks like a good plan to me.

(By the way, if you need another example, we're studying towards a four-year Masters in Chemistry and doing holiday work at a multinational clinical testing company.)
(As an admin assistant. Don't show off.)

Good luck !

If you want examples we are a unix admin for a large corporation.

We know another unix admin for a large corporation who has or almost
has 2 masters degrees.

We know a former editor of a prestigeous financial publication who is
a system. Went out disabled with Lyme disease.

I believe there are *even* doctors ;-)

I would like to get you started on multiple musicians, being one ourself, but I don't necessarily want to get the thread too off-topic. :3
