public speak
Jul. 3rd, 2007 08:04 pmHi!
I haven’t been involved here in forever, I just lurk every now and then these days, but I’m having an interesting opportunity.
I might end up doing an information speech to a bunch of psych students about multiple issues, and I’m trying to decide what topics to cover. Does anyone do this or anything similar?
I’d love any suggestions! Thanks :)

Date: 2007-07-05 03:57 am (UTC)I hate that its giftwrapped by so many as the ONLY option, though i think its a good choice for some in certain extreme situations.
i think that if i could leave one, and only one impression on someone that might be some multiples counselor some day, it would be that integration is not everything its hyped up to be, nor that its the only option.
thanks! :p

Date: 2007-07-04 04:19 pm (UTC)We've never talked to a class about being plural, but probably the greatest thing that has helped us talk about trans* and genderqueer stuff is relating our own experiences in a simple and clear way. The first time we were going to speak to a class, we'd prepared an outline of what we were going to say, but once we started speaking, we quickly abandoned the outline and just gave our brief life story and added some thoughts about what being genderqueer means to us. We threw in a few details to dispel misconceptions the general population has about trans* and genderqueer people, and then we took questions from the audience. I think we've spoken to classes in this fashion five times now, and each time we've given our presentation we've gotten better at giving it since we've been able to consider previous questions-and-answers to tailor the performance around. The last two times we've spoken were probably the most fun, since we were giving the presentation alongside a gay man for our campus GLBTStraight-ally group, but I don't know how easy it would be to find a willing partner for a presentation about multiplicity. :3
During our time with psychology majors at our school, I've noticed that the students really enjoy looking at case studies. If you could dig up any realistic, positive studies done on multiplicity, that might be a good place to start. Definitely, the best advice we can give is to build up your confidence and at least act as if you're very sure of what you're talking about. :3

Date: 2007-07-04 10:53 pm (UTC)hmm.. basically just give them examples.. and point out that we're not all axe murderers.. that almost all of us are functional.. have responsible jobs.. and are probably people they know. have known are plural. Depending on the students.. it could be a very good thing.
we'll try and come up with other ideas too

Date: 2007-07-05 03:47 am (UTC)when we were trying to get it sorted out, we knew a live-bodied 6-way multiple age 45 with a career, family, and a working system that worked well for them.
we couldn't really get their tactics to work well for us (dual-fronting makes us really disoriented) but they were living proof that it could be done. Every source we encountered that said we had to be committed and face years of expensive extensive whatever-amoral, was easy to disregard as a result.
thanks!

let us know how it goes?
(*giggles* btw, it seems we aren't the only ones availing ourselves of the dream avatar program from gaiaonline *points to icon* but how do you make it alternate like that?)

We know another unix admin for a large corporation who has or almost
has 2 masters degrees.
We know a former editor of a prestigeous financial publication who is
a system. Went out disabled with Lyme disease.
I believe there are *even* doctors ;-)
