IRC chat

Well, there's been some interest lately in an IRC chat room for multiples, so a few of us who particularly wanted one got together and founded one.

It's #multiplicity on the esper network. If you're familiar with IRC it'll be easy to get into.

1. Go to www.mirc.com (there are other irc clients, but that's the one I use, so that's the one I can walk you through.)

2. On the left hand side of the page, click the "download mIRC" link.

3. Choose one of the download servers, and get a copy.

4. Install it. This should be quite easy, let me know if you have any troubles.

5. Start it up.

6. The first thing you'll see is a pop up asking you to pay for it. IRC is freeware, but they do ask for donations. You do not need to pay, and nothing happens if you don't. Just wait about ten seconds, and you can close that window.

7. The second thing you'll see is another pop up asking for your email and other information. Go ahead and fill that out. You don't need to enter real info if you don't want to. Choose a chat nickname and enter that. "New server window" should be checked, but "invisible" doesn't need to be. Once your chat nickname is entered, click "ok"

8. Now you should see a big white box, with a small box below it. The small box is where you can type. Right now you're not connected to anything though, so that's the next step. Type "/server irc.esper.net" into that box and hit enter. It should start connecting you. This may take just a minute or so, but once you're connected, it's going to load a TON of text into the window above. You can ignore most of it, it's not important really. When that finishes scrolling down, you're in!

9. Join the channel. You can enter "#multiplicity" in the channel pop up it gives you, or you can type "/join #multiplicity" into the bar. You should get a new window popping up, that's the chat room. The list of who's in there should be in the right hand side. I'm there as "SPark" usually.

I know that's a lot of steps, but once you've done it once, it saves everything, and you don't have to do it all again. For example, next time you open the program, you can click the "connect" icon, rather than having to type in "/server irc.nightstar.net" and it will connect you to the server you last used. You can even save #multiplicity in your favorites, and automatically join it as soon as you connect.

If that's unclear, questions are welcome. And sorry for the spam on this subject lately. Now that a chanel is in place, this should be the end of it.

Ah, thank you for the instructions. I was lost in mIRC.

We actually found Trillian IRC easier to use than mIRC, if you keep having trouble with it.

I used Trillian once. Ender used it a lot. Once you figured a few things out, it was pretty nice. It also was less stress on the lappy we ran it on. :)

And now I use it again. :)

I could have sworn there was an irc chat up in the past, though I tend to avoid triggering irc if possible because my peers barely know how to even use the computer and tend to type incomprehensible gibberish.

There was, it died. I made a new one, then decided the location (where the original one was) sucked due to server rules (the place was designed for rooms of 1000, not 10) and The Pack Collective moved it to esper.net so we could be neighbors with some other channel. :)
