either it didn't go through, or it got deleted...if it's the latter, you'll delete it again(but I doubt it)

has anyone seen the show heroes? one of the characters has a split personality...her name is Niki, and her alter is as yet unnamed(but we in the fandom call her ikiN)

any thoughts on how it's portrayed? I personally think it's done pretty well, they really portray ikiN as a seperate person alltogether, and show lots of things I've experienced...the lost time, the disorientation...and ikiN even manifests her own tattoo...physically...something I'm sure members of this collective would love to be able to do...

so, any thoughts?

I have not seen the show but it is of interest to me. We
are very interested in the mythology around multiplicity.
Multiplicity is an element of almost every traditional US
superhero. They have their private life and their life as
a superhero. Often the superhero was created through a traumatic
experience.

The same is true of many traditions of shamanic multiplicity/possession.
The spirits come to live with the shaman when he/she is pushed to the
end of his resources either through a trial or through a life experience.

...As a matter of fact we have been thinking of editing a book on the
subject if we ever get the time.

I'm not really sure if I consider the civilian persona/superhero persona bit a depiction of multiplicity. It seems to me more like a case of "I'm a different person on the job and at home," except with the twist that no one knows about your on-the-job identity. It's the whole "Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I do" thing.

after watching tonight's episode, the alter definitely comes off as a Protector, and it turns out she's been around for a good while, at least six months before Niki suspected anything.

I agree with Fragmented. Part of the difficulty of coming out as multiple (I almost said "our" but I didn't mean me- it's my partner that has DID so that was an amusing misuse of "our" here...) is the stigma that it holds.

She had a WAY easier time coming out as a lesbian!

I'd also like to see some other alters or some positive moments with this character. However I'm not sure I'm going to be able to continue watching the show cause it's really gross and violent. But I really like the cop character so I might hold out.

Personally I'm a little confused by Niki because her superpower is ... being a multiple? That's a bit odd. And has a bit of "multiplicity is a mystical occurrence and doesn't happen to normal people" element that I'm not sure I get. Show in general I like, but I'm not sure I've actually forumated an opinion on Niki in particular yet. Still waiting to see what they actually do with it.

I love that show. And Niki, too. But I really don't think she's multiple. I'm guessing it's something a little more complicated - dimensional travel, anyone *g*? I mean, if she were a multiple, ikiN wouldn't have that tattoo. There must be two bodies. Maybe it's the opposite of multiplicity... two bodies with one mind. Kind of like in "A Hat Full of Sky".

There are some supposed cases of multiplicity (though the only ones I've read about are from the turn of the 20th century and the 1950s, so frankly how accurate are they likely to be?) where when one alter is driving an injury like cigarette burns actually physically manifests itself, and vanishes when another alter switches in. It depends on the level of connection between the body and the alters. But there is some slight basis to connect the idea of manifesting a tattoo like that with actual multiplicity.

(But who knows how much actual research the writers of Heroes did, right?)

That rehash of Doom Patrol? I took one look, rolled my eyes and flipped over to history channel.
