So I was looking up imdb.com this morning (because I love the site) and looked up Roseanne, the tv show. I clicked on Roseanne the actress and read that she once said she "suffered from multiple personality disorder." Did she really? I always thought she was just nice to multiples but I didn't know she said so herself. Is it true, or was she trying to get more controversial?

Just curious.

Oh, ghod, not Roseanne.

Yeah, she spent several years claiming to be multiple. Her account of childhood horror stories read like Truddi Chase's, and her selves had names like Piggy, Bambi and Fucker. I have no idea whether or not she's legit. I think she might have gone into therapy for something else and been misled by one of those Courage To Heal types, the time would have been right.

She is quoted on the Religious Tolerance pages for multiple personality as follows:

" I have this head shrinker and he says...[MPD is]...deliberately induced because the CIA is where they started inducing it when after they brought all the Nazis over from Germany to run American Psychiatric Association....It is all mind control and all kinds of things to invent people with multiple personalities.... I believe the government has implanted some kind of a chip into my head where... [my thoughts are] monitored by Barbara Walters and these other women. And they take all my ideas...I think [Oprah] sits with her finger on the switch to the chip....several times I wondered if I had multiple personality disorder. In fact, or if I was just from another planet." Roseanne on the Larry King Show, 2001-AUG-16

I mean to say, it's clear that here she is making fun of what she was told, but on this website it is taken entirely out of context and used to make us look like a bunch of what Andy would call flaming bloody looneys: "Some material in the essays linked to this menu may seem to read like a really bad work of fantasy-fiction. You might suspect that the author has dissociated from reality. However, we assure you that sincere, intelligent and caring people really do hold these beliefs."

damn. well that fucking sucks. Someone I confided in a few years ago told me that Roseanne came out as multi but didn't go into any detail.

The hard part about being a multiple with an abusive history that aided in splitting (to some extent) is that there are those like Roseanne that (possibly) make us look discredible. I mean, I know not all multiples have abusive histories and not all abused people are multiples, but we do and we are and don't appreciate our reality turning into a prime time joke.

How come so many people jumped on the multi bandwagon in the 90s and now noone talks about it?

Where can I get a copy of that interview oon Larry King? I really always liked Roseanne and recently saw her speak on Michael Moore's Slacker Uprising tour in OCtober and I'm pissed to think somoene I always held as a patron of working-class feminisms is a multiple asshole....

Generally, the psych industry sees it (and us) as an extremely embarassing scandal that they're trying to bury. I'm not sure if Roseanne has ever formally retracted her claims of multiplicity, as others have, but she sure doesn't talk about it much these days, AFAIK. There have been some analyses of the scandals, generally by authors who took either the viewpoint that all multiplicity was iatrogenic, or that 'real' multiplicity was extremely rare. I think not talking about it is their way of trying to stamp out the rest of us, presuming that we'll vanish if we can't find doctors to 'support' our self-perceptions.

I don't know this is true for a fact, but I believe michael smith from the cure is multiple, 6 ways. his '6 different ways to my heart song is rather suggestive, and I thought I heard a rumor once.

as well, the lead singer of veruka salt pretty much says outright between a few of her songs, her other person is seether.

Anyone know this to be true or willing to set me straight?

I know its cheesy, but Im really interested in knowing about successful people/celebrities/etc that are multiple.

You know, singlets often have this (metaphoric sort-of-not-really) sense that there are a lot of different selves in the same body. Does anyone in a multiple system ever get the sensation that the people they are when experiencing different emotions are somehow different? Happens a lot for singlets.

Sometimes I kind of refer to things like "depressed me", "happy me", and "angry me" as if they're different people. For singlets, sometimes each emotion can feel like you're a different person as you experience it. That's especially true if you tend to feel things very strongly. Your whole perception of life and friends and family and everything can change, sometimes, with a single mood change, and that's why it almost feels like you're a different person.

I logically understand it and that's what I figure when I see song lyrics like that, but for me there's a huge difference between the two... like, I have a silly make-believe persona called Theodore, I refer to him as my "inner gay", and he's always been just a silly game, kind of like the difference between... a hot wheels toy car and an SUV.

I know that ^Andy is a complex person with a wide variety of interests, such that people have mistaken him for multiple in the past. That is, they think that he has his own system, besides being in ours. The fact that he signs his name in a variety of ways (initials, nickname, full name) depending on what kind of thing he's writing, was also used by them as a "clue" that he was secretly plural.

It's not that there aren't multiples within our system. But Andy's not one of them.

Well Darius doesn't actually DO anything, he just sort of sits there. We don't even know if he's like, a "whole person" or not. And Damus... well... *no one* likes him. He scared the shit out of my ex, and after meeting him our therapist told Ramon she wasn't sure she was helpful/qualified/experienced enough to deal with him. He's a *little bit* scary.

We're all well aware of the hypocrisy of it all but still... heh.

Very occasionally, we've suspected Ruka of possibly being a household of his own, although he says that's not the case. He is a complex sort of person who seems to have different 'molds' for responding to different types of circumstances in his life-- his values, priorities, and reactions to people can differ depending on which one he's in, to the point where an outside observer might think it was a different person. In some ways it might also look like an example of the idea that multiples 'split' and create selves who exist only to perform certain functions in certain situations. He says no, however; he actually says that 'all of those are me,' that they all contribute to what makes up the single being 'Ruka,' and he doesn't see why that being should have to have exactly the same responses and ways of thinking in every single situation to be considered a singular entity. Maybe it's just a case of his philosophy being out of step with the society around him. *shrug*

And, yeah, I can see how someone might peg him as The Dark Spooky One Who Probably Eats Babies Or Something, but the thing is that that's something he can also step aside from, and does. Maybe he's just more comfortable with the "dark places" in his mind, more conversant with them, than the rest of us. He has said, on many occasions, to not be scared of a person like him, but of the person who claims they 'could never do anything so terrible'-- that those are the ones who will be mindlessly complicit in atrocity, because they'll justify it to themselves as being something else.

Generally, we hesitate to identify artists as multiple based solely on their lyrics and/or biographical information.

Musicians write lyrics for all sorts of reasons, and even if the words clearly
described someone who is multiple, they could have been written about a friend. It isn't enough to go on.

After all, you wouldn't like for others to decide you were not multiple based solely on your creative content.

All I know is that she came out with a book at one point in which she mentioned having been molested as a child. I can't remember any direct references to multiplicity in this book, although I may be remembering wrong, and she was promoting herself as one on talk-show circuits for a while; she struck us as probably having been misled by a doctor who wanted to see multiplicity everywhere. At least part of that quote sounds like it was a joke, albeit a pretty lame one-- not knowing the original context or having actually heard her say it, I can't tell you-- but good ol' OCRT swallows it with complete credulity as an example of how "those people" really think.
