Feature story for JA course
Mar. 16th, 2005 05:00 pmI'm thinking I'd like to do a story on natural and/or functional multiplicity for one of the courses I'm taking in school right now. (I'm studying journalism.)
Problem is, I'll have to change my topic if I can't interview anyone. I could possibly do it by email, but face-to-face would be best.
Is it possible that there's a system here that lives in Calgary, Alberta?

They aren't local to him, however.

Date: 2005-03-19 07:17 am (UTC)Would you be willing to provide your body/system's full legal name through email, then? I can use another name for you in the story, but even as a student, I can't really used unnamed sources.
If that works, I'll be emailing you shortly. Probably tomorrow night.

Date: 2005-03-19 03:12 pm (UTC)We could not give you an interview under those conditions. Very few systems could.
What if you were interviewing people who'd been sexually assaulted, or others who for whatever reason wanted to keep a low profile? What is your instructor thinking?

Date: 2005-03-19 04:33 pm (UTC)They'd have to give their names, or their quotes couldn't be used. But their names could be changed for the story. Like when you see "Jane Doe*" and at the bottom of the page "*Names changed." That's what I'm proposing here.
What is your instructor thinking?
He's thinking of real life.
There are very few situations in which journalists use unnamed sources. The only one I know of is if they're writing stories quoting spies.
Like I said, I can change names for the story itself. But under ordinary circumstances, no real journalist would use a source who wouldn't give their real name at all, and we're expected to use the same standard.
It's a legality issue. You have to be able to prove that the person you talked to really exists, and you're not just making them up.
In theory, because I'm a student, I could just make "real names" up, and I'd be highly unlikely to get caught. Hell, I doubt my instructor would ask for them; he'd just assume I had them. But that's not the greatest idea.

Date: 2005-03-19 07:20 am (UTC)That's awesome, anyway. Would you be willing to provide your body/system's full legal name? Even as a student, I can't use unnamed sources, but I can change your name for the article.
do you need more sources?

Date: 2005-03-27 06:01 pm (UTC)If you're still up for it, yeah - I can send you the list of questions I drew up. I'm not certain how relevant you'll find 'em, (I'm guessing in the dark all the way with email interviews), but if it works for you, great, and if you want to take a sideways approach, or go off in a direction I haven't covered, that's great too.
I'll send 'em.
