A 95 year old man once told me
everyday I’m fighting to live, taking
around 30 pills a day just to feel alive
and everyday, your fighting to die.

Why is that? when we are young
a lot of times you want to die
even try it, thinking suicide is the best route.
but when you grow old you fight to stay
alive, taking everything under the sun
for your heart, for your liver, for
all the things that keep your ticking.

Only when we have experienced life do
we wish to continue living it. Only when we
know what we have to lose will
we try to keep it.

Nathaniel Hawthorne speculated that young people are comfortable with the idea of death because they haven't put down a lot of roots in this world yet, just like in your final stanza. Makes sense to me.
