So the season premiere of Law & Order SVU features a multiple mother. At half time she's apparently having a crisis of dysfunctionality, and thus endangering her one-year-old baby. Trauma origin, violent guardian with an accent, amnesiac host, helpless little, stress-trigger switching, not to mention really offensive language from the cops. This is gonna be one of those scream-at-the-TV nights...

Aaaand final score includes Fifi the Slut waving a knife to protect herself from evil alter Burt, a publicity-motivated therapist, a pair of murdered parents, and in the end it turns out she faked the whole thing so she could get away with it. At least she didn't kill the baby. God, I love network television. Shoot me now.

*growls* We were pretty much swearing from the opening minutes.. *sighs* but we watched it all for the same reason we tolerate people watching televangelist.. you have to know what your enemy is doing.. or in this case what people are being taught about you.. so you can argue against it.. show them they're wrong.
*sighs* is about all we can say.. and it really won't do any good to write about it.. cause well there's no such thing as bad publicity for network tv.. and they'll go, but" we weren't portraying a plural house, we were portraying someone faking being plural" sighs.. which in some ways is worse

I'm absolutely tired of all those 'alter' stereotypes. I wonder how people in real systems who are characterized in a similar way feel. If I were labelled a particular type of 'alter' myself, I would be infuriated.

It's demeaning. I've been labeled the "Evil alter" or the "Protector" by people *in here when we didn't know better* and by singlets who we FELT were close enough to know the truth, and also by online people where we're very very very open. People say I'm evil because I speak my mind, because I don't take shit lying down and because *in two cases* because I have a deeper voice.
Wonder what they'd do if they knew the "Evil bitch" "alter" was sitting in on English class and taking notes and shit. Oh yeah. :-D I will kill with the Braillenote of doom. :-P
But I think you know what I'm trying to say.

I watched it just to see how it would end. We knew it'd be the typical "psycho multiple" bit. But it ended just like that movie Primal Fear. My therapist had us tape it so we could watch it together because she was going to be missing it. But due to how it ended I don't think she'd care to watch it. She is equally unhappy with how MPD (or schizophrenia, or PTSD, or PPD... all are stereotyped and over exaggerated and usually far from the truth)is portrayed in the media as we are, which is nice.

Primal Fear didn't seem believable to me (I've watched it) -- that had a lot of dramatic loopholes you can drive a mac truck through (Carrie was a screenwriting major in college).

I have very low expectations of how much respect media has towards the topic in general.

We watched it last night. Our Bourgnon was skeptical, saying to me that even at its best, this episode would be a nutcase killer multiple. Bourgnon then gave another one of his cynical moments by saying she'd be a fake. That was before it even started. Then, when *I* watched it, I saw that it was seeming to be a blantant rip-off of various plural books I'd heard my Others had read. I watched it, and about the time she had the crazy moment in the trial, Bourgnon said "Wait for it..."

I did. Bourgnon watched co-present with me, and then Bourgnon said, "Dammit. I'm right." Bourgnon watched as it was revealed that she had read a series of articles on multiplicity and responsibility. After it was over, for about ten or so minutes, we discussed how *we'd* react to any such criminal acts done by members of *our* system were any ever to be done.

Bourgnon said "No contest. One of us commits a crime, we all go to jail."
I responded with a few questions about such an idea, and each time, Bourgnon said, "No. Jail or nothing." Bourgnon and Allen and Viktor then agreed mutually such a defense would be demeaning to our system. Why put *ourselves* on parade just to get this sort of response? >.>

I wanted to scream, but didn't. I think everyone was over dramatic, and the whole show didn't give a realistic perspective of one with DID. The scene that got me most, two actually, were the knife at the cops house, and the dead parents. What the...?

The scenes didn't fit. One minute, it's about the baby. And the next, the parents and the cops wife.

Being a multiple myself, I switch, but I don't feel like that was even portrayed accurately. Some of us may be psycho as the show said, but some of us are common folk trying to make it through another day. I am the latter.

And personally, you can trap me in an elevator with any randomly chosen multiple in the world, and I'd vastly prefer it to, say, being trapped in an elevator with the singleton Jeffery Dahmer..

The lack of understanding--and common sense, to demand that shows like this portray their characters accurately--that people have sometimes is just tragic.

There are so many multiples, and yet it's so hard to find an accurate portrayal of what "normal" (sorry for using that word) multiples are like. I wonder how come there are still people in the world who can believe than the personality of humans is flat enough to look like that if they "split" or anything else. Even if we were only parts to a whole, it'd just be impossible to just divide into "the angry one", "the sad little kid", etc.

I guess we'll have to wait till singletons are bored of watching boring "dark twin-good twin" on TV...

Blah! We were the same way with the text in our psychology book in class! A lot of awful definitions for Multiples, hell they even threw in a picture of the ever-so-popular Sybil. The editors think it's a bunch of pretending and it's always trauma based. Yeah I was quiet about it during class but after I threw the damned thing across my bedroom cursing wildly. I was not a happy camper.
