On Saturday we heard a radio play. One of the characters had trauma-based DiD & guess what? She ended up killing someone and spending the rest of her life in an institution getting worse. This upset me so much Carrie had to apply vodka/coke/movie to my brain. I mean it was really upsetting!

I've last night realised something.
Spider-Man 1: Bad guy had a split personality, suffered memory loss etc...
Spider-Man 2: Bad guy had 4 mechanical tentacles that spoke inside his head and could act without his concious knowledge...
Spider-Man 3: I've heard it's going to be Eddie Brock/Venom...

I'm sensing a pattern here people.

I've tried thinking of a single healthy positive portrail of a 'multiple' in the media, and the closest I could get was DrJekyl/MrHyde from League of Extraordiary Gentlemen & even then that was hardly positive. The only positive DiD case in comics was Crazy Jane from Doom Patrol and that wasn't exactly a glowing review, what with her being 'crazy'.

What I always thought of superheroes was like when Superman says "Clark Kent is who I am, Superman is what I do." More like having different sides of yourself at home and work.

On the other hand, I think there might be some stuff out there where the 'civilian' is actually unaware that they're sharing bodies with another person who's a superhero, or something close to it? Lilac picked up some scanlations of a Mega Man X manga where one of the characters basically seems to be two different people (the 'regular' person didn't know about the 'hero' person, but just had blackouts every time he was in a dangerous situation that required the 'hero,' although it was kind of played for laughs. But at least they didn't do the whole good/evil dichotomy with it.)

Yeah, the only people more maligned than multiples in comics are reality manipulators, who are, without any exceptions, killed.

Reality manipulators? Really?

Yeah. Check out Marvel's "Avengers: Disassembled" any of the Dark Phoenix saga from X-Men (which went down differently than X-Men 3, so its a good read) or any of the Fantastic Four stories invoving Franklin Richards

VENOM!!! Ooooh I LOOOOOVE that character!

Does anyone remember the episodes of Spider Man with Doppleganger (http://www.toymania.com/custom/Galleries/tinyman/tinyman2/dp1.JPG), Shriek (http://www.samruby.com/Villains/Shriek/ShriekSmile.gif), and Carnage (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=spider+man+Carnage)? Gods, I loved those episodes.

Hmm, never thought of the Green Goblin like that before....But anyway, has anyone seen Heros? One of the characters has "another her" that is trying to take over her life, or something like that. Please excuse me if I got that wrong, I haven't been keeping up with the show.

I think Jessica on "Heroes" is mostly focused on getting rid of the ex and getting their son back. Though there's a new episode tonight, we'll see...

Mmmmm. I believe that there is a good multiple within the City of Heroes franchise, but she only became good once she got her multiplicity under control.

There's only one place I've ever found healthy multiplicity, which is in the Discworld books by Terry Prachett. There's a minor character (or pair of characters) in Thud, and a major character in several books known as Agnes. Having Perdita for a headmate gets her out of several scrapes, and a career in the opera. (I recommend Carpe Jugulum for the most developed depiction of them.)

Yet again, another reason why Terry Prachett SO rocks!

There's Altogether Andrews too, although that might not be quite so functional.

I love the fact that Pratchett also wrote basically the opposite of multiplicity (one person in two bodies). He definitely seems to like playing around with these sorts of ideas.

Yeah, how come the multiples in movies always are good/evil personas? Some kind of f***ed up stereotyping going on there. Can't say I ever understood that.

Guess that's one of the many reasons people always think a multiple has to have the sadistic/evil archetype inside.... --- why people seem to be a bit afraid of us. *(sighs)*

Hey, I just rewatched League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the same day as you posted this! Score one for the power of coincidence. Meanwhile, I personally thought that the first Spiderman movie wasn't all that bad... I've always interpreted the interaction between Norman and the Goblin as a cooperative one, like Isam and Luc from Wheel of Time (not a series I'd recommend, btw, it's chauvinistic and onerously long). Not so much a good/evil pairing as an evil/evil one, and the sort of relationship I'd probably consider a positive portrayal if the two of them weren't villains.

I can think of a few positive portrayals, but other than Discworld and Yugioh, none of it is particularly mainstream. If you're interested, I could make a list, but for now I'm just going to recommend Terry Pratchett's Carpe Jugulum and David Gemmel's Dark Moon. I think I have a review of the latter somewhere on [livejournal.com profile] plural_watching, but it's likely to contain plot spoilers.

Could you expand on this? We'd like it for Pavilion's media reviews.

http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/library/library_media.html

And that goes for anyone reading this. Anything you've seen and want to comment on. It doesn't matter if something has already been reviewed -- several reviews of the same thing is better, 'cause the reader gets different people's takes on it.

About the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Jekyll and Hyde in this film are indeed multiple, however, there is the typical good-evil dichotomy. However, in the comics, Jekyll and Hyde come off as a Hulk knockoff. Still plural, but a different form. If ya'll want, I'll give you a review of both the comics and the movie. Or, considering others have already talked about the movie, perhaps just LoEG Vol I and II. If this is any help.
