Nov. 27th, 2006 06:14 pmOn Saturday we heard a radio play. One of the characters had trauma-based DiD & guess what? She ended up killing someone and spending the rest of her life in an institution getting worse. This upset me so much Carrie had to apply vodka/coke/movie to my brain. I mean it was really upsetting!
I've last night realised something.
Spider-Man 1: Bad guy had a split personality, suffered memory loss etc...
Spider-Man 2: Bad guy had 4 mechanical tentacles that spoke inside his head and could act without his concious knowledge...
Spider-Man 3: I've heard it's going to be Eddie Brock/Venom...
I'm sensing a pattern here people.
I've tried thinking of a single healthy positive portrail of a 'multiple' in the media, and the closest I could get was DrJekyl/MrHyde from League of Extraordiary Gentlemen & even then that was hardly positive. The only positive DiD case in comics was Crazy Jane from Doom Patrol and that wasn't exactly a glowing review, what with her being 'crazy'.

Date: 2006-11-27 09:04 pm (UTC)On the other hand, I think there might be some stuff out there where the 'civilian' is actually unaware that they're sharing bodies with another person who's a superhero, or something close to it? Lilac picked up some scanlations of a Mega Man X manga where one of the characters basically seems to be two different people (the 'regular' person didn't know about the 'hero' person, but just had blackouts every time he was in a dangerous situation that required the 'hero,' although it was kind of played for laughs. But at least they didn't do the whole good/evil dichotomy with it.)

Gods, I loved those episodes.

Date: 2006-11-29 03:30 am (UTC)I can think of a few positive portrayals, but other than Discworld and Yugioh, none of it is particularly mainstream. If you're interested, I could make a list, but for now I'm just going to recommend Terry Pratchett's Carpe Jugulum and David Gemmel's Dark Moon. I think I have a review of the latter somewhere on

And that goes for anyone reading this. Anything you've seen and want to comment on. It doesn't matter if something has already been reviewed -- several reviews of the same thing is better, 'cause the reader gets different people's takes on it.
