For those of you who showed some interest, I've written an essay about the heroes character Niki/ikiN and whether or not she's really multiple and such.

it's there, if you're interested.

I"ve wondered about this one myself, when watching the show, but I don't think it's multiplicity. Most multiples when they look in the mirror have the image in the mirror say or whisper things to them.

It looks more like shizophrenia to me...perhaps her superpower is that the schizoid manifestation can inhabit the body, altering and increasing it's abilities, because face it, niki would not be able to "tear a thug in half", this indicates a prenatural strength.

I think it's more like a case of possession than multiplicity, simply from the aspect that Niki can see and hear ikin externally. If not shizoid affective, perhaps simply an advanced aspect of her mind (the Id? The Ego? The Subconcious?) had developed paranormally and is altering her abilities, body and attitude.

Just an opinion, for what it's worth.

Eh what? We've never heard of this. It happens in the Sybil movie, but that's because creepy shit happening in a mirror's reflection is a good old standby of horror flicks, and the movie definitely capitalized on that genre for entertainment reasons.

We've also never read about it in any journals, studies, and it's not in the DSM-IV. Actually, I think having visual hallucinations would be the clincher between being diagnosed with "schizophrenia" (if you have them) or "DID" (if you don't).

I think it's more like a case of possession than multiplicity, simply from the aspect that Niki can see and hear ikin externally.

That, we'd just assume was "creative license" or jazzing things up to make them more "entertaining", just like the mirror bit in Sybil. Internal communication is hard to demonstrate in film and video, and audiences prefer showy things that are total BS anyway.

gah....**headdesks** That was supposed to be DON'T have the image in the mirror...etc...for the same reason you stated, that would be more the clincher for the shizo concept.

Feh. I type faster than I can talk, and on somedays, faster than I can think, and I leave words out. Why is it always the important ones????

As for the rest, yeah, I'd love to kick every director's ass who portrays people with mental illness as being evil sick psychopathic murderers. That type of pbehaviour is generally only with...will, pyschopaths as far as I know. Someone with very EXTREME bi polar might hurt some in a manic episode, or there was the whole son of sam thing with shizophrenics though personally? I suspect that was lawyer fast talk.
I've read more than a few medical journals where annon surveys of shizoid and shizoid affectives check of examples of what "things" tell them...killing someone or something is almost never even on the list, or if it is, it usually has a 1% response check.
I had a friend whose cactus was always yelling at her to go brush her teeth. Occasionally trees would tell her to get off thier roots. Yeah, real dangerous.
