So, I watched this episode of Law and Order, involving a girl "who suffers from multiple personality disorder" Anyone seen this ep?

http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie.aspx?m=531836

We watched it through, laughing our asses off the whole time, and lemme tell you, Sally Field she ain't.

anyway, just looking for people's opinions on the ep, a couple things got me angry, but well, one or two made up for 'em...like one of the "expert" psychs at the end, he was all like "a whole person, thoughts, memorys, bodily functions" and Faith was all "yes!"

but they kept saying things like "male personalities being protectors" that got her all pissed, and me too...

and the "switching" was sooooooooooo overdramatic, it was rediculous...but the "nancy" personality kept referring to the body's parents as "megan's mother" and "megan's father" which seemed a little more in character to me...

anyhow, I'm babbling...

haven't seen it, but ugh..

I guess I can understand why they have to over dramitize switching on tv.. because there's not other sure way for viewers to know there is one? because you have to remember, most television in the states is dumbed down alot because people don't like to think anymore.. :/ a shame really.. that's like my rant about people not wanting to watch movies with subtitles because it takes too much effort to read.. :/ but that's s different subject...

needless to say, we don't watch much television anymore.. just dvds.. Kasia

Yeah we hated that episode too.. actually we can't really think of media portrayal of a system that we've liked.. law & order, heck there was even one on babylon 5 for one episode..

think last season.. a teenager escapes from the psi corps academy.. after killing his roommate.. during one of the scenes on board the station you see him talking to someone.. and the character has this really high/little like voice.. then his whole body changes and he gets this really um.. intense look on his face and then the person that he is talking to.. well basically his brain explodes..
sorry this is a little disorganized..

Holy shit, that's a blast from the past! 'lol'

It's so weird sometimes when I see my old name on things I've written.

Glad it's still coming to good use though.

One of us saw the episode a few years ago before we
really knew we were multiple. We felt very uncomfortable
about it.

Haven't seen the episode, but likely would have the same response if I had. It's TV. It has to be dramatic or else people won't watch it. I tell people in the poly communities the same thing about Big Love; if they were perfectly functional normal people, no one would watch the show.

Is it weird of me to expect the media to have an accurate representation of subcultures? Someday, being multiple is gonna be a protected group like being female or being black, and we're all gonna look back and wonder how we managed to put up with this level of stupidity.

Exactly

By no means. Your frustration is shared by many.

We've noticed that when you eliminate the idiots, others become idiots to take their place.

It's no use trying to make things idiot-proof. Somebody will just build a better idiot.

Media portayals of multiplicity suck. Haven't seen a single one yet that I've agreed with--in movies, TeeVee, or books. I've written letters but never got anything but form responses.

We're out to very few of our relatives, but we met up with one of them the day after this turkey originally aired. She was all "Listen, you'd better not tell people you're multiple." Not that she thought we were like the stupid TV portrayal, but that other people would think we were.

Could you write up a summary so we could put it on the review page? (http://www.astraeasweb.net/plural/review.html) And at the Pavilion media review section (http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/library/library_media.html). Also, it might be a good idea to contribute it to [livejournal.com profile] plural_watching although I don't know if anybody actually reads that any more. thanks... sigh...

I've only *just* (after nearly three years...) stopped doing that. and even that is because saying "Luwana's mum" is too long for lazy ol' me. That's kind of neat. Some people would view it as a little posery, but it's certainly the way we work.

We much preferred the episode when they came after Lyta, and she had people doing jigs and stuff just to prove her point. Media portrayals of telepaths are surprisingly open to several viewpoints. Unfortunately, media portrayals of multiples still pretty much suck. A lot.
