Sep. 25th, 2005 07:10 pmEdit: Due to high demand, I'm going to make another post later, offering DVD-R copies of the series to any takers. It'll be at cost, so we're talking $5-$10 at most, and I'll throw in the necessary media players on the DVD to make sure you can watch. Anyway, it might be a while, since my sys is relocating some 2,000 miles in the next few days, but you'll be kept up to date!
Hey hey, haven't posted in a long time, though I've been checking in a lot. For anyone who's forgotten, my name's Ellany, and I'm executor of my system. We hold elections for the role every several years. (The body's age is currently 21.) There are four primaries in our system, with others who are only beginning to become conscious. We have been consciously multiple since the body being 18, although it's been very obvious since long before that. Still, it feels like we're barely starting to explore. We've had soulbonds attach themselevs to us, have had others in the system show themselves, have had splits and merges, and so on. You know, the daily grind.
Bio. We absolutely love having the "4forall" pizza from Pizza Hut, since there are four of us who are mainly out and so we can each get a type of pizza that we like. I met Jem from
our_haven some time ago (she lives in my area), and everyone in Haven has been very helpful to us. For the longest time, our system's been in "slumber", and we had a healer (an external, just to define) come and see what was wrong and she talked about some sort of barrier being erected by an alien force that had been preventing switching. No idea what that was about, but clearly, it's been crumbling recently. Yay for togetherness! That was a dark several months.
Anyway! Re-introduction over. I wanted to share something with you all. ^^ I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before, but earlier this year an anime named Mahoraba: Heartful Days was released. I wanted to post about it immediately, but I decided to wait and see if it would be any good. A few weeks ago, the final episode (an hour-long special) was released, and I can finally say that it is most definitely worth watching, and all of us here have gotten something out of it.
What is it, then? It's basically a Japanese animated series focusing around a girl who is multiple and the boy who loves her. The members of the system are somewhat typical, but I didn't care, it was just cool to see such things portrayed in a decent light for once. Never is it preachy, nor does it seem bad, nor does it seem like any sort of commentary at all. It's just how it is. It is not taken as being completely "normal", but it is taken realistically instead of being overplayed, and I found it to be a pretty close depiction of reality. There are light integration themes, and themes that it sourced from trauma, which made me go "ugh", but they only come up during the last half hour of the 12+ hours of the series' running time, and they are handled in a way that didn't offend or annoy or bother me in the least. (And I'm as anti all-of-that as you can get.)
All in all, it was surprising to find a show that addressed the subject so well, constantly making us think "Yep, that's just like us!", and even covering some far more obscure things, such as the nothingness experienced when nobody's fronting, issues with someone going into hiding and having to be coaxed out, and so on. All while keeping a happy, light-hearted, innocent flair. It's still hard to comprehend that there exists a 26-episode series, an entire season in other words, focusing entirely on such a subject! Of course, there's a lot more to the story, involving everyone who are friends to the girl, and how their lives go. There is friendship, family togetherness, love, and all sorts of things. There's far more to it than just the synopsis covers, in fact what I've written about is a small part of it, but I wanted to mention what's relevant. About the only problem I've found with the show is that it's pretty slow - in fact, if you do watch it to try it out, watch the first two at the very least, because you won't get the full effect of the coolness otherwise.
Anyway, my work here is done. ^^; Hope that there hasn't been a giant discussion about this already or something. Oh yeah, and I made a composite image of some of the main "personalities" involved in the story, which I've inlined underneath the LJ-cut below.

I wish our eyes changed colors.

If you use a bittorrent client like Azureus (http://azureus.sourceforge.net/), you can double click on the file (set of files, rather) once it's downloading, and it'll show you some statistics. You can go to the tab that lists the files in the set, and you can right click on each one and choose whether to download it or not. Most clients have something like that. In other words, download the big one but set all but the first two or three episodes to download. ^^ Then if you want more, set only the next couple, and so on.

Date: 2005-09-26 08:50 pm (UTC)If you and everyone involved are willing to give your address to strangers, and there's no issue with helping me pay for the shipping and DVD costs (let's say it'll all be $10 at most if i get the nice DVDs in cases instead of the ones in a stack), then that's payment enough. ^^

Date: 2005-09-26 04:20 am (UTC)You can always check the archives to see if something has been discussed before. And it's not against the rules to bring up something that's been discussed before, even in detail; the suggestion is mostly in place for people who need help with common problems or aspects of household dynamics or logistics. For instance, how do I communicate with them, co-fronting and how to do it, should I take medication/go to the hospital/come out to my therapist/parents/spouse (pro and con), etc. These are concerns a lot of people have so they are more likely to have been discussed in older posts. And since new people are always joining the community, asking the same question again can generate further discussion.
Our eyes don't change colours either, and we had a singlet friend in grade school who did.

Date: 2005-09-26 04:22 am (UTC)Oh, and call me a LJ idiot, but is there a way to do a string search? In other words, would it be possible to somehow have typed in "Mahoraba" as found posts in [info]multiplicity that matched?
Anyway, I'll think about a review. ^^ It might take a while to piece everything together, of course. What sort of length would be good?
(*giggles* Replied *just* as the original comment was deleted for editing purposes. ^^; So, reposting the reply.)
And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 04:39 am (UTC)Reviews in Pavilion can be any length. Check samples out here:
http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/library/
The story you were thinking of was probably Veritas (http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/archive/) -- we wrote part of it with the Two Courts,
Or it might have been Cache (http://www.very.net/~nikolai/sf/cache1.html) by Nicolai Kingsley, which we've carried on our pages forever. The badges there are what inspired the ones on Veritas. There is someone on this community who is trying to actually make such badges.
You're not an idiot and I have never found a way to search inside a community. You can do a Google site search on "Mahoraba" in Livejournal, but that'll find every reference to "Mahoraba" on Livejournal. You might possibly try Google's blogsearch, although I don't know that it'd do you much more good.
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 05:03 am (UTC)It was Cache, by the way. January or someone from Haven mentioned it a while ago.
Cool to meet you. I've heard about you guys. Nice to meet someone from the famous Astraea. Might not be back for a while but I wanted to say that. So many awesome role models here.
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 05:29 am (UTC)"famous" Astraea eeps! *straightens his headscarf, checks to make sure his slip isn't showing* (Unless this is radio.) Well, it's nice to meet you guys, too! Thank you, really. No kidding, with all the AAaaarrrghh about multiplicity getting the shaft in the media, it's really good to see that there are starting to be positive portrayals. You know maybe that'll be what we ask our singlet friend that always sends us DVDS of anima and cartoons, for Xmas Chanukah Thingie Whatsit.
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 11:17 am (UTC)Of course, everyone knows that. o.o
Nonetheless, I strongly doubt there are any DVDs, except copies of the downloadable episodes burned onto DVD-R and sold at $30 a pop. ^^;
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 10:23 pm (UTC)I don't think it's fair to say that all commercial parties involved are entirely on board with online fansub distribution, particularly in the wake of cease and desist letters coming directly out of Japan against sites like animesuki or straight to individual fansubbing organizations. I'm also reminded of the diary entries over at Production IG asking fans not to download GITS: SAC prior to its world-outside-Asia release (entirely fair, since that was not only a pre-licensed property in all territories, but announced as such from the get-go). ADV's recent experiments with Bittorrent have been more in the form of promotional materials than anything. My understanding is that the various parties do see the power inherent in the distribution mechanism, but are finding it to have a knockon effect on sales as the bubble bursts. It'll be interesting to see if IAD's experiment with iTMS-style downloads works out, although it seems ambitious at best.
(I realize this isn't the place for the copyfight argument, but the anime industry is becoming less and less copacetic. Ethical downloading is something else yet again, and I'm not disputing that that's possible and practical.)
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 11:24 pm (UTC)Some shows actually go as far to thank the people watching fansubs of it. That's happened a little but the one I remember is Battle Programmer Shirase. The announcer said that in the real episode that was on in Japan.
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-26 11:54 pm (UTC)Which is their right and their perogative, and has been the natural balance of fansub etiquette since the days of samizdat VHS distribution. Anime is a commercial product much more so than an artistic one in the vast majority of circumstances, and, moreover, one increasingly dependent upon the sales from overseas licensing and distribution to survive. If a company feels that the margins are slender enough that fansub availability would cannibalize potential sales across territories, then it makes economic sense for them to act. I can't fault them for this.
I'm simply saying that it's more complicated than all parties being equally aligned on either side. There was a time when fansubs were a viable means of securing grassroots foreign interest, and therefore the attentions of a licensor; those days are over. My worry is that excessive faith in the industry's good will contribute to the first actual lawsuits against fansubbers sometime in the next eighteen months, so we need to tread very carefully indeed.
As for Battle Programmer Shirase -- my goodness, speaking of multiples in anime, is that Pretty Sammy's Misao Amano?!
And, since I arguably shouldn't be going into this here at all, I'll leave you alone now. <g>
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-27 03:43 am (UTC)Oh, and the Veritas link you posted isn't working for me. Is it linkdead, or am I the only one having problems viewing it?
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-27 05:29 am (UTC)For Colin Ross, try http://www.abebooks.com.
Veritas should be:
http://www.karitas.net/pavilion/veritas/archive/index.html
Re: And now, we're playing catch!
Date: 2005-09-27 08:37 pm (UTC)Thanks for the link, but I'm still faced with a no-book dilemma even then, as I currently have no way of ordering things off the internet without using my mom's credit card... and I'd rather avoid the potentially awkward questions of the "why did you just spend $30 on THAT?" kind. ^^;;; I still ought to grab up The Watchmen again and give it a more attentive look, since my initial review was woefully cursory.
I actually was debating giving a more expanded treatment to Dark Moon as well, but held back so as not to give away too much of the plot. If more thorough analysis is preferable to retaining the element of surprise for potential readers, I'll definitely give it a more in-depth treatment as soon as I am able to do so.
And thanks for the corrected Veritas link as well.

3, Okay! :D
4. Gonna make an edit to this post and a new post later. The demand is pretty high for me to make copies of the show, and, like I've said, it's encouraged as long as you don't turn a profit. ^^
5. No problem. *giggles* It took me a long time to understand why "on-topic" was so important anyways, it's so that nobody was in the dark about something they liked just because they didn't click on a post that didn't interest them. Right? o.o That being said, I still don't really care.. ^^;

4forall pizza is the greatest. I'm a pepperoni lover, while we've also got a cheese only lover and a pepperoni & sausage lover. So normally, that's our pizza of choice when ordering out :D
