Sybil has been on the Oh! channel a lot lately. I was watching some wierd movie and then Sally Field jumped on and talks about "the people"...not sure how I feel about this. Pisses me off. I can't stand this movie and I can't stand how she portrays multiplicity and the ending sucks and I hate the movie.

I hate it. Pisses me off.

anyway.

I dunno, I liked the movie...not for it's portrayal of multiplicity, but for it's portrayal of THE BOOK. I think it was extremely well done for a movie-based-on...

and I think Sally Field played the part to the hilt...

just mho.

Parts of it really annoy me. But the more I watch it, I notice little things in the movie that I sort of like.

This isn't about Sybil, but in the movie Identity, I love how it portrays switches. Going back and forth from outside to inside.

Its defninitely not the best in the world and could have been done a lot better. But for something done in the 1970's, ya gotta give it some credit. Its good for all they had to work with back then.

I do wish that someone would re-make the movie... with someone who is a multiple in charge of production. THAT would be interesting.

Lots of people hate Sybil for different reasons. We liked the movie and as far as all the controversy goes our system in the beginning seemed to work a lot like hers did in the movie. But lots of people think Sybil was a fake and "the people" were implanted or whatever by Dr. Wilbur. Then again, lots of people seem to think we are fakes and we know we aren't so shrugs to each their own I suppose.

For my part I wish they would remake Sybil showing what really happened since both book and film were highly tarted-up. Much of what you see was based on wishful thinking (Dr Wilbur's, Ms Schreiber's, the filmmakers', &c.) rather than the actual events. (And bear in mind, the film portrays her as a virtual psychotic, much more out of control than she's depicted in the book.)

According to our sources Wilbur meant well but was a self-promoter who liked it best when she was treated like an empress. She was also extremely sloppy about writing up reports and keeping records of prescriptions.

Since we have virtually no information about Shirley Mason and none about her treatment, we do not know what actually happened in those sessions. We've received emails from people who knew her well, who have told us that she was genuinely multiple. That she remained that way to the end of her days. But that's all we really know.

Some time ago, we heard that research was being done on Ms Mason's life which would become a book and film depicting the real events, but we've heard nothing on that front for several years. The project may have died, or been stalled out by legalities.

(And bear in mind, the film portrays her as a virtual psychotic, much more out of control than she's depicted in the book.)

I noticed that she can't seem to go for more than five minutes without having some kind of breakdown or behaving in an obviously 'bizarre' way. No wonder people come away from this stuff thinking that they can always "spot the real ones." (So a word to the wise: if you can carry on a conversation without falling completely to pieces or switching, you're Not For Real. That's always good to know.)

And yeah-- it doesn't seem to have a lot to do with the book either, however far the book was from reality.

But of course, because if she behaved like most plurals, you'd never be able to see a thing out of place!

Seriously, this is what caused a generation of multiples to believe they had to behave like this in order for others -- including professionals -- to believe it. God, reading that bilge by Kluft and Ross and even Putnam -- all of them eager to re-create that tawdry little film in their office.

Agreed. By all of us. Except Evelyn, she thought the ending was sweet (the hell?).

I take your point, but; You're lucky!! This junk was the only image of multiplicity for too many years. If you weren't multiple like Sybil, you weren't! Keep that in mind as you read or watch, if you decide to (you may not want to, it's pretty awful).

Every time I see that damn picture I remember why we did the website.

I noticed it suddenly appearing and reappearing on tv lately, as well. And a few friends who've decided to 'catch it' to 'get a better view on multiplicity'. *sigh*

A friend of ours has been encouraging me to write about us. I've tried to point out to him that it's just not interesting enough, no one would publish or buy it, and besides which, it's hardly a story with a beginning, middle and end. We don't even remember our childhood, and every so often we discover that we know less about our teens than we thought. What would I write about?

What being multiple is like for you, now.
