In a word? I'm sitting here trying to choose between the words that best describe how we did it: 1) Will power. 2) Drugs. 3) Context.
By will power, I do not refer to the popular misconception that "the mind can do anything". I'm talking about the more ordinary sort of will power, a drive to accomplish something that one can have. It's more like the will to overcome shyness that leads people to join Toastmasters (http://www.toastmasters.org).
By drugs, I mean psychedelics. Even dear old Mary Jane is a good friend -- these things help us experience ourselves and each other as clearly separate people. That is not going to work for everybody and your mileage may vary as always. I've heard people who were looking to integrate say that acid helped them feel closer and more united. They didn't integrate as such during the trip, but they felt it made integration easier when they did go for it.
By context, I refer to taking opportunities for different people to be up front as themselves when their slightly different body language and vocal mannerisms (if any) won't be noticed. There are more such opportunities than one might think. Also, one can cultivate opportunities by choosing to hang out in places where such things are unnoticed or taken in stride.

Is that helpful?
