Unfortunately, mental disease in this society is viewed quite differently from having cancer. A DSM explanation may not be as helpful as you'd wish. You need a way to remind your co-worker that her friend is still a person, deserving of the same respect and friendship as before her alleged "psychotic break". The DSM may only confuse things. Her reaction was emotional, therefore it might be best to appeal to her emotions.
