A question: we have heard references to the older idea of multiple personality - of "spirits" temporarily or permanenently moving into someone's body. We were wondering if there are any good sources of information on this, books or websites or what-have-you.

Another question: does anyone experience what could be called past lives as members of your system? How does this work?

One of the few things I've read on this sort of phenom was Earth Angels by Doreen Virtue (I don't like Virtue, I was bored at work...) She mentions things like Walk-ins who 'walk into' a body while the other spirit walks out. Perhaps the other spirits don't walk out, and the spirit sticks around?

Oh, eh, I suppose I should briefly introduce myself (I'll do a proper one later) but I'm a person who's wanting to learn more, who has more than one spirit sharing the same space.

As near as we can determine, the three of us were all together in the past, what we call "the time-before", possibly for more than one life. [livejournal.com profile] duathir wasn't born in this body; his twin and I were. We've met other people who apparently knew us in the time-before, and know of quite a few multiple Houses where one or more member "isn't from around here", so it doesn't seem to be that uncommon a thing.

We have yet to see any book or web-site on the topic that isn't full of mealy-mouthed newage glurge, rank speculation beyond the data, and assumption that the author's view of The Universe And All is the correct one. *wry grin* I'm Pagan clergy, [livejournal.com profile] duathir is skeptic-agnostic verging on atheist, his mostly-silent twin is apparently some kind of shaman... so our views on a lot of things tend to be fairly diverse.

There are two in Our system, Seneca and Mintaka, that We feel may have memories from a past life. We know very little about them though, and are still trying to explain to Ourselves how and why they are.

In my system, Ffraga was a supposed past life of mine. She had memories of her life, home, and her death. Looking back on it, I'm not sure if she was my past life or if she just reincarnated into my system.

In our system we have quite a few beings who have memories of a past life. In most cases they don't remember their deaths, but don't remember how they got here either. Most of us believe their memories to have been constructed at their moment of "birth".

Dianne's a very different case. She believes herself to have come from an alternate dimension, and will be very angry if anyone even makes the suggestion that maybe her previous life wasn't "real".

We knew a girl of a different system who had a being within her called "the dragon" who would come and go every once in a while. She knew a girl in a different body, who was also visited by the being called "the dragon". Both of them came up with a very similar description for appearance and behavior.

*shrug* we tend to be skeptical of the paranormal for the most part. But we don't necessarily discount the possibility.

We are a mixture of many types; walk-ins is what I've commonly heard spirits not "organic" to the body/mind/"original", as well as past-life representations or reincarnations (really don't like those terms but can't find any that say the same thing in the way I'd like for it to), "fragments" - or those who are not as "well-formed" as some of the others, and then you're "regular" "run of the mill" inner people ;)

Can't answer your "how does it happen" question, but we have a few theories of our own (that we don't feel are well-formed enough to share, yet).

"Walk-in would be a correct term for me, though it has uncomfortable associations with a rather "New Age" view of things."

!! I Hear you on that one!!!!

well ... er... since the theories aren't... as well formed or thought out as we'd like for them to be, we'd be up for discussing them but not on a public forum =\
(we're odd that way...)

if you'd like to email though go ahead that's cool/no problem.

Reincarnation: try Ian Wilson's All in the Mind?, chapter on author Ada F. Kay and her belief that she is the reincarnation of James IV of Scotland, but also in a way shares mind/body space with him. Gets up in the morning and decides what she's going to wear based on who she/he is. When she took a rest cure at some resort or other, staff had to address her as "Your Highness". Etc.

Sharing space with spirits: my main sources on this subject are old Spiritualist texts and publications. There is some stuff about it at http://www.prairieghosts.com/florence.html regarding one of the most famous mediumship-as-multiplicity relationships, between Florence Cook and Katie King. (You might also check them out on the Lurancy Vennum thing, http://www.prairieghosts.com/watseka.html and there is more about that at http://www.webspawner.com/users/thewatsekawonderinve/)

A good deal of modern psychiatry and psychology originated in the seance room. It's not necessarily that the doctors believed there were actual spirits around, but that they might learn more about the way the mind works by studying mediums. A little-known fact about the Doris Fischer thing is that when she seemed to be having continued problems after supposedly being "integrated", her doctor took her to a spirit medium that he considered very reliable (that is, she'd never been caught faking). This woman believed that Doris was a victim of spirit obsession and that there were forty or fifty spirits duking it out for ownership of her body. Something like that. Must have been very exciting. And of course there's Helene Smith (http://www.astraeasweb.net/plural/fromindia.html).

You might try this site just in general:

Jay
