t's sort of a guardian-angel type. Allison apparently came across some of them in his practice -- people who would say they came from outside the group and were not the result of a split (these were all abuse/splitting groups). They seemed to guide and direct the group. They often knew the names, ages and traits of everyone, or said they did. They often presented with a kind of biblical or new age style, saying "thee" and so on, that they were a 5000-year-old angel or something and hinting at infinite cosmic truths that they might someday let humanity in on ... oh, you know. Allison concluded that ISHs were "higher-level states of consciousness" whose purpose was to make sure the group survived until the ultimate goal of integration was reached. He got the term "inner self-helper" from his work as a minister, where Christ is spoken of that way, as "the Christ in me" or "the God in me", one's own personal divine nature. (If there is such a thing.)
We've had ^Gabriel mistaken for an ISH because of his name and because he's always making sure we're on time and things like that. We've met a few ISH types from other people's systems and they are usually more pragmatic, less "mystical" than Allison describes (not surprising) Also shy, don't come out that much.
