Do you all have trouble imposing or establishing structure on/in your lives? How do you handle it? I have problems establishing structure and get very stressed out when it's tried to be foisted on me. And yet I need it. It's a strange balance.

Yes. We seem to have trouble with employing any kind of structure that might wind up resulting in orderly and controlled productivity. No idea why, though, and we don't get much done without some kind of structure.

It seems to work okay if someone else provides the structure, but most of us also have problems with authority...

We don't look at it as imposing structure. We establish routines, because then we don't have to waste as much energy and our time (which is a huge big deal in our system!) figuring out what we should be doing; we have a regular cycle to do it. It helps a lot with things like walking the dog and having clean laundry. This can be mild, like wiping down the bathroom counter every morning, or serious, like at work (we're editor/writer) we have a pretty planned out two-week cycle so that we stay on top of things and still have some time to mess around creatively.

We also try generally to get in the habit of putting things in the same places, so that we're not tripping over each other's stuff feeling like it's all one huge mess.

For a long time we were suspicious of routines or structure as being somehow imposed and then one day we clued in that if we decided it, it wasn't imposed. :-)

Then every so often we need a day off the routine and toss it to the wind and go on our merry way. A routine isn't rigid, it's flexible and helpful. For us anyway.

Oh and p.s. How we did it (with help from this cleaning site :)) was to add small things into our routine slowly. So that it wasn't "no structure" to "all the way everything structure." But just one thing this week, next week we'll add that in, next week try to put the keys in the key basket ok? That kind of deal.
